  • Musgum Earth Architecture, Cameroon.

The Musgum are an ethnic group of people living in North Cameroon and Southern Chad.

They have for thousands of years developed a unique form of earth architecture for their houses.

A picture depicting a Musgum Chief’s homestead in the 1850s. Notice the Dome houses in the background.

    Catenary arch.

The shape profile of the Musgum houses are in the form of a catenary arch. Catenary arch is the strongest shape form that is naturally occuring that gives the lowest use of material. This is also similar to the Nubian archs that have characterized Nubian house architecture for thousands of years.

    Exterior wall patterns.

The exterior of a Musgum house is hand made into patterns that are both aesthetic and functional.
These patterns aid in assisting workers to climb on top as scaffolding during repair and also aid in directing rain water to the ground to prevent wearing out during the rainy periods.

There are mainly 2 design patterns used.

    Curved wall.

The Musgum people could achieve this centenary curve using basic rudimentary tools, something that even with the current tools available, is still a tall order and we need to use Computer Aided Design to achieve this.

Notice the smooth curve achieved in the above house, perfect workmanship.

The Musgun houses had 2 cone shaped buildings linked together by a flat roof vertical wall structure, forming architectural balance that brought out the aesthetic appeal.

South American / Colombian earthbag architecture.

South American architects have drawn this inspiration and have come up with modern architecture based on earth, very closely similar to the Musgum architecture.

    Ancient African Architecture.

a4architect.com is in the forefront of reviving this ancient African architecture which is most suitable to resolve current housing requirements in Africa.
Musgum architecture uses soil at 95% of the total building material uses, hence saving the environment , keeping construction at a low cost and ensuring buildings that are a work of art, buildings that use their facades to placate and beautify the environment.
a4architect.com has documented the construction techniques used and is currently using them to implement similar houses in Kenya.

  • Septic Tank Construction in Kenya.

Septic tanks are a fundamental part of the total building construction, without which the building functions will not be optimal.
Septic tanks when well designed, and all parameters put in place, work perfectly well, are cost effective and function much better than bio digestors.

    Biodigesters.

Biodigesters are on 2 categories, the 1st category is the one that uses gravity just as a septic tank and the 2nd category is the one that uses an electric air blower. The electric air blower type costs in the range of kes 1m and works perfectly. The only drawback is the steep cost of installation and the high cost of maintenance since it uses electricity daily.
The 1st category of biodigesters usually cost less than the electric ones but slightly more than septic tanks. These are prone to blocakge and failure since their sizes are too small, not commensurate with the daily water consumption of the house, and elements such as grease taps and ample size for the biodigestion to occur is not present, hence failure.

This leaves building owners with 2 options, either the expensive electric air blower types or a well designed septic tank.

    Return on Investment.

For building owners with apartment blocks in Nairobi suburbs such as Rongai, Ruai, Ruiru where the rent charged is not enough to offset the daily running costs of the air blower type of biodigester, the septic tank becomes the best option since it works just as well and costs 90% cheaper.

This running cost can be compared in a way with a swimming pool running cost. After construction of a swimming pool, the maintenance costs for technical human resource persons, electricity and chemicals can hit an average of kes 20000 to 30000 per month.
The air type biodigestors also require technical persons, electricity and chemicals , albeit on a much lower scale than a swimming pool.

History of Septic tanks in Kenya.

The intial septic tanks constructed in Kenya by the colonial government in the 1940s,50,60s and 70s work perfectly well till todate.
They were small in size and all detailed specifications on how septic tanks should be constructed were put in place.
Septic tanks constructed in the 90s, 2000s to currently lost out on details, with building owners having unqualified personnel constructing the septic tanks, leading to an unnecessary high cost of construction and high failure rate for the same, leading to the current biodigester boom to give a solution to waster water disposal. The poor specifications have resulted in high financial losses , which can be resolved by having the septic tank constructed to the required specifications.

    Sizing of septic tanks.

Septic tanks are sized by the number of occupants they serve.

2 Bedroomed House septic tank size.

A 2 bedroomed house, with 4 people living in it will have an outflow of 200 liters of water per day. This should have a septic tank of 1m width by 1.5m long by 1.5meters deep.

20 unit apartment block septic tank size.

Similarly, for an apartment block of 20 units, each with 3 people living inside, will have an outflow of 2400 liters of water daily and will require a tank size of 1.2meters wide by 2meters long by 1.5meters deep.

These sizes are small and cost far much less than the biodigestors.

When septic tanks are constructed without the calculated dimensions, they will be too large, hence expensive to build, and the large size that is not commensurate to the number of users will make the internal conditions that aid the anaerobic decay not to work properly, leading to the tank getting full too fast or blocking altogether.

    Grease traps.

Well designed septic tanks will require grease traps at the entry point and exit point into the soak pit to prevent the grease from kitchen water clogging the soakpit pipes , preventing the soakage, which results in backflow buildup failure.
A grease trap costs kes than kes 1,000 to construct, but when not put in place, can result in frequent septic tank exhaustion costs or re constructing the soak pit all over again.

    Partitioning.

Septic tanks need an internal partitioning with the 1st chamber 2 times the size of the 2nd chamber, with the inlet into the second chamber located lower than half the height to prevent non bio degradable waste from blocking the outlet.

A sufficient height versus surface area, tending towards deepness is better in ensuring the biodegrading of the waster into soak-able liquid onto the soak pit.

Well placed vents at the last man holes will ensure that the foul smell will only be released very high up , ensuring the septic tank does not release any odor in the compound.

  • Breezeway Designs for Houses

Breezeways are narrow , long corridor-like spaces that join two rooms, mostly used to join the external car garage to the main house.

Some breezeways are completely enclosed with windows and walls while others are open on the sides, with only a roof above to shelter from the elements of weather.

Some breezeways are architecturally designed to have several functions such as being the entry porch, outside lounge area and at the same time connecting the garage to the main house.

    Columns.

Use of columns to demarcate the breezeway space is a very common method of design, whereby the space in between the 2 column forms and enclosure which offers partial privacy. Hanging plants and potted plants kept along the edges is a simple method of beautifying the breezeway.

Rustic floor finishes such as Mazeras stone tiles are a good method to finish a breezeway since its a space that is partially outside and partially inside, hence a blend between the clean sleek internal finishes such as ceramic tiles verses the rustic exterior landscape finishes such as cobble stone or Mazeras stone tiles.

Breezeways can be architecturally designed to allow visibility through them from one side to the other, especially if well manicured landscape design has been done on both sides of the breezeway.

A metal grill designed to a pattern can offer security in case the breezeway needs to be well secured in case of burglars .

Glass panels can be used to keep the spaces in the breezeway away from rain and wind, while at the same time allowing for through visibility for the landscaped gardens on both sides of the breezeway to be seen. This gives an inside-outside feel while inside the house, whereby house occupiers can get a feel of nature while still inside the house.

  • Outside Facade of Buildings.External Finishes.

External faces of buildings require well thought out finishes that are protective of the elements of weather and at the same time enhancing the beauty of the building.

    Cement based plasters.

Textured paints that have got mould resistant biocides are a good solution for external plaster finishes.

The textured wall paints come in several different thicknesses which can be patterned over to come up with different designs.

    Moulded cement plaster.

Normal plaster without the anti mould additives will result in such stained walls after several years.

    Concrete Cancer.

This is caused when the internal steel reinforcement gets into contact with moisture/water and rusts, causing expansion which swells and cracks the concrete surface.

This can be prevented through ensuring that the concrete is adequately vibrated during casting. For existing issues, the concrete can be repaired and water proofed to ensure that the moisture ingress is stopped.

    Local cement based finishes.

The most common are found mostly along the Coast.

In the above picture, look closely on the ground floor, you will see a bumpy pattern locally called ‘matitimatiti’ in Mombasa and its environs.
This comes out very well when painted white or white washed.

    Painted stone

Machine cut or hand dressed stone can also be jointed smooth and flush then painted to come up with a rough texture surface that contrasts well with the smooth painted rooms surfaces. This also helps to reduce costs associated with plastering.
